Nate Johnson and Jake Zimmerman of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission were recently recognized by a statewide organization for their exceptional dedication and service to veterans.

The Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions awarded Johnson the 2023 Steve Barrett Veterans Service Officer of the Year Award.  Johnson started with the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission in 2015 as an intern and was hired full time one year later as Assistant Superintendent.  He is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq.

"We're really proud of Nate and the good work he does on behalf of our veterans. Whether it is his casework on the Veterans Treatment Court or the Homeless Veteran Task Force, Nate is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of the veterans living in Kane County," said Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission Superintendent Jake Zimmerman. “We are fortunate to have him on our team."

Zimmerman was also singled out by the Illinois Association of County Veterans Assistance Commissions at its annual banquet with the 2023 Advocate of the Year award and the Allen J. Lynch Foundation's Veteran Service Officer of the Year Award.

As Superintendent, Zimmerman leads a team of five full time employees and is the only Veterans Assistance Commission in the area to be staffed entirely by veterans.  The Commission is instrumental in securing resources and support for the 18,644 veterans in Kane County. So far this year, the Commission has secured $5 million in benefits for the County's veteran community.
