Kane County's Maintenance Superintendent Bill Edwards retires this month, boasting an impressive tenure of nearly 35 years of service with the Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT).

Edwards started his journey with KDOT on April Fool's Day in 1989 as the youngest member in the maintenance team. He worked his way up from a Highway Maintainer to Mechanic and Crew Leader to Supervisor and finally Superintendent.

Along the way he received many certifications and achievements including:

  • Earned certification as a Master Heavy Truck Technician
  • Played a pivotal role in achieving and maintaining the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Blue Seal for our repair shop.
  • Awarded Professional Manager of the Year for Public Fleet by the Chicago Metro Chapter of the American Public Works Association in 2016.

Edwards led the most visible section of KDOT, known for keeping the road maintained and handling winter operations like snow plowing.  He supervised 29 union employees, three management supervisors and several seasonal employees.

“Bill is regarded as one of the most dependable and responsible employees," said KDOT Director Carl Schoedel. “He is known for handling responsibilities seamlessly, providing assurance and peace of mind during challenging situations like snowstorms."

Edwards has been a leader in innovation and efficiency by not just embracing change but also actively contributed ideas for improving efficiency and enhancing service levels.  He also successfully reduced the number of trucks and routes while the County Highway system continued to expand.

Edward’s long time colleague of 35 years and Road Maintenance Supervisor Scott Vervynck noted “Bill has always been a good friend and a great superintendent. We’ve worked well together over the years; through thick and thin, through the good and the bad. In my opinion he was a real asset to the County and will be missed dearly.”

He received a round of applause and congratulations from members of the Kane County Board's Transportation Committee during their meeting on December 19, 2023.

Thank you , Bill!
