Kane County Teams up with ICC for Railroad Investigation and Safety Course

​There are more than 14,000 highway-rail crossings in Illinois, with more than 7,400 miles of railroad track.  That makes Illinois the second largest rail system in the U.S.  Kane County has 128.9 miles of track, serviced by seven railroad companies. Between 2017 and 2022, there have been 10 crossing collisions in Kane County that resulted in 3 deaths, 15 train accidents and 4 hazmat incidents (diesel).

Kane County recently hosted two dozen emergency responders for a safety seminar offered free by the Illinois Commerce Commission. Participants learned to use the proper safety techniques while investigating or responding to a grade crossing collision or trespasser incident, in addition to maintaining on-scene safety unique to the railroad environment.
