Kane County Awarded Grant to Boost Flood Safety

​Kane County is among 23 northern Illinois government agencies selected to receive a 2025 Powering Safe Communities grant from ComEd and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus. The county will use the funding to purchase a solar-powered warning sign that alerts drivers and pedestrians when flooding occurs, combining sustainability and public safety.

Other recipients include:

  • Brookfield Police Department: E-bikes and solar-powered radar signs

  • City of Harvey: AEDs for City Hall

  • DuPage County: Fast and Level 2 EV chargers

  • Dwight Fire Protection District: Battery-powered emergency response tools

  • Flossmoor Police Department: Flashing pedestrian beacons

  • Forest Park Fire Department: Battery-powered chainsaws

  • Fox River Valley Public Library District: AEDs and training

  • Johnsburg Police Department: Solar-powered speed radar signs

  • Lake Villa Police Department: E-bikes for forest preserve patrol

  • Manhattan Police Department: Flashing school speed signs

  • Rainbow Beach Park Advisory Council: Solar-powered lights, emergency call stations, and phone chargers

  • Villages of Berkeley, Burlington, Glendale Heights, Lynwood, and South Chicago Heights: Solar-powered speed radar signs

  • Village of Lyons: Level 3 EV charging station

  • Village of Morton Grove: Emergency warning siren with battery backup

  • Village of Summit: Solar-powered radar trailer for school zones

  • Village of Thornton: Pedestrian signage and crosswalk improvements

  • Village of Waterman: AEDs for police vehicles

  • Winnebago CUSD 323: Stop-arm cameras for school buses
