Widow Reminds Drivers to Prioritize Safety During National Work Zone Safety Week
As National Work Zone Safety Week (April 21–25) approaches, the widow of a Kane County Division of Transportation (KDOT) worker urges motorists to stay alert and cautious in construction zones.
On May 19, 2016, 44-year-old Steven Chidester was repairing potholes along Harter Road in Blackberry Township when he was fatally struck by a passing truck.
Each year, around the anniversary of his death, Lorraine Chidester honors his memory with a road safety message. She created a flyer featuring his photo with the reminder: "Slow Down, Move Over for All Roadside Workers." She also recently spoke at a Kane County Transportation Committee meeting, urging officials to promote safer driving habits.
“I am here today to honor my husband's memory and ask that you promote ‘Move Over for All Road Construction Workers’ in your districts, in your homes, with your kids, your families, and your friends in hopes that this tragic accident never happens again," Chidester said.
To honor Steven Chidester, KDOT employees dedicated 3.8 miles of Harter Road—from Scott to Seavey Roads—through the County’s Adopt-a-Highway program.
Stay Focused: Avoid Distracted Driving
Distractions behind the wheel go beyond phone use and include eating, drinking, adjusting the radio, or other activities that take attention off the road.
Three Main Types of Distractions:
🔹 Visual – Taking your eyes off the road
🔹 Manual – Taking your hands off the wheel
🔹 Cognitive – Taking your mind off driving
Safety Tips:
✅ Pull over to a safe location to text or make calls.
✅ Designate a passenger as your “designated texter.”
✅ Keep your phone out of reach (in the glove box, trunk, or back seat).
✅ Use your phone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature while driving.
✅ Stay focused—keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
You can honor Steven Chidester’s memory by driving responsibly and ensuring the safety of all roadside workers. 🚧
