Kane County Observes National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Promotes Safe Firearm Storage
On June 10, 2025, the Kane County Board passed a proclamation recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day, honoring lives lost and raising awareness about the ongoing impact of gun violence.
The observance began in 2013 in memory of 13-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, who was tragically killed in Chicago. It has since grown into a national movement focused on prevention and community safety.
Gun violence remains a serious concern across Illinois. From 2019 to 2023, there were 145 gun-related deaths, including 79 suicides, along with 410 reported gunshot wound injuries in Kane County.
Statewide, between 2015 and 2022, 84% of homicides involved firearms. During that time, firearms were used in 36% of suicides and in 57% of violent deaths involving children and teens. In Kane County from 2019 to 2023, there were 145 gun-related deaths, including 81 suicides, along with 410 reported gunshot wound injuries.
In response, the Kane County Health Department is expanding efforts to prevent gun-related injuries and deaths by offering free gun locks and promoting safe firearm storage. At a recent safety event, the department distributed:
70 biometric gun safes
317 gun cable locks
99 locking drug storage bags
As part of this year’s recognition, the County Board presented the proclamation to Steve McHugh, a local advocate who has worked tirelessly to promote gun safety. “The best way to honor gun violence victims is to work to prevent future shootings,” McHugh said.
Kane County residents can pick up free gun locks at various distribution sites throughout the county. To learn more or find a pickup location, visit: https://kanehealth.com/Pages/Violence-Prevention.aspx
