What began as a chance meeting at a small café in downtown Algonquin has grown into a 65-year love story, one that recently came full circle with the help of the Algonquin Police Department.

Bill and Vivien, who were married in March of 1961, first met as teenagers at Schumann’s Epicurean, a café once located near what is now Cornish Park. Vivien parents owned the restaurant and she worked there, while Bill accompanied his father on dairy deliveries. Before long, Bill left for the Navy, and the two stayed connected as pen pals, a relationship that soon blossomed into romance and engagement.

Their wedding day included a memorable surprise. The Algonquin police chief at the time, a frequent visitor to the café, had joked about “arresting” Bill for marrying Vivien because she was such a catch. When the couple exited the church, they were greeted by a squad car waiting outside, turning the joke into a lasting memory.

More than six decades later, that moment was recreated. During a March 14 celebration at Galati’s in Cary, the couple’s family arranged for an Algonquin Police Department squad car to arrive, surprising the couple and honoring their wedding day story.

The gesture, coordinated by family members and local officers, served as a reminder of the couple’s enduring bond and the power of shared memories.

Bill and Vivien’s story, rooted in community and connection, continues to resonate, 65 years after it began.
